Walls…

A wall, standing tall, surrounding us like an evil shadow. A sign of change, of evolution creeping upon us in the shape of buildings, comercialism’s stranglehold on the everyday walker, hiding in the shadows of self doubt, the walls closing in, help…the need to breath… sufficated by the pressures of our being…

There is no escape from the wall, I can feel it here, amidst the minds of many… Comfortable I feel, yet driven by doubt, the fear of offence, of inadiquisy, the judgemental eyes hanging on my every word…
I want to talk to you, but there is a wall, without a word said you can still feel it…

A different wall for a different upbringing, the years of repitition creating the fears we all hide, wanting to break out, to SHOUT!!, to express our hidden secrets, to interact on a deeper level with anyone and everyone… Without the walls of conscienceness, without the confines of the latest trend… The bricks are only held together with mortar…

This is my undoing of the wall, exposing myself for me… the fears turning into love, the barriers into wide open spaces… Our aura’s radiating like reborn babies seeing light for the first time…we are bound by nothing, enchanted by everything…

There never was a wall, only the ones errected in our suckerpunch minds, filled with the cans and cants, the dos and don’t, our internal prison cell…

Oh no! The wall have come back… but only the walls of illusion…

To be home!

A 5-month journey, surfing and competing around the world, taking me to places I have been, many I have not. To meet people, to see things differently, to feel a little different, to be another person.

My name is Johnny Abegg.

The purpose of this mission was the World Qualifying Series (WQS), a circuit that goes by at times unnoticed. Competitive surfing is amazing to me, a version of control, of a sport that is ever changing, unpredictable and subjective. Using one strategy in a heat and winning, using the same in the next and losing. Our running track is unpredictable to say the least, trying to take control of our 20-minute heats the objective.

At the time, the journey was long, tainted with every variable you could imagine. Almost every experience is like it is your first, being reborn, seeing life with curiosity. Even in places I had been before, I found untouched magic, and sometimes in places I didn’t think I would. You just never know where you will be, or who you meet, appreciating every turn, good or bad, they go hand in hand.

These memories of my journey are strong; to be accessed at my own free will, at any given moment. To return is like to have never left, 5 months rolled up into a single moment like it’s an overnight dream!

Suddenly I am home again, in Byron Bay. A place filled with magic, a place many have heard of, and that more will visit. A congregation of people from all over the world, no face the same. To be here now is also like a dream, stepping out of the time warp, back to where the journey began. Subtle changes apparent, new buildings, new haircuts, new gossip and new happenings. The place ultimately seems the same.

To break the routine has refreshed my soul, to come back to a place like Byron I can see its spell. A place that will always be home to me and one that we should all step back, appreciate and love.

Another Journey begins...
